This was the title of a successful television comedy-drama series and also the name of its principal character. The series first appeared on BBC1 in 1986 and then from 1991 to 1994. Altogether, there were 73 episodes including two 90-minute Christmas specials in 1992 and 1993.
The series was based on novels by John Grant under the pen name Jonathan Gash. 
Lovejoy was a fictional character, a likeable, roguish antiques dealer, played by actor Ian McShane. True to the novels, he was known only by his surname. 
The series was filmed on location around East Anglia. During the period 1991-1994, extensive use was made of locations, especially pubs, in the Hundred Parishes area.

Albury, Arkesden, Aythorpe Roding, Berden, Clavering, Farnham, Finchingfield, Great Bardfield, Great Easton, Great Saling, Henham, Much Hadham, Saffron Walden, Stansted Mountfitchet, Stocking Pelham, Takeley, Thaxted and Wethersfield.
